According to new reports, General Motors is close to officially giving the GMC Granite the green light for production. This new compact crossover was originally shown off at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this year, and will is aimed at improving differentiating GMC’s lineup of trucks and crossovers.

According Motor Trend, GM is still working on whether to keep certain distinctive elements found on the concept vehicle available on the production model, such as the rear hinged doors. Aside from these challenges, the Granite will ride on the same platform that underpins the Chevrolet Orlando crossover, which will be making its way to other markets but not here in the U.S.

As it’s riding on the same platform as the Orlando, the GMC Granite is also expected to receive the Orlando’s 1.4-liter four cylinder engine. This new unit is mated to a six-speed dual-clutch transmission.

No dates are available yet for when Clovis GM consumers can expect to see the production model, but the GMC Granite will likely be seen undergoing testing by late next year.
