Although the full-size truck segment continues to see new models and new powertrains, the small truck segment has not received much attention from automakers. Despite poor sales in this segment, General Motors is hoping to infuse new life into the Chevrolet Colorado and the GMC Canyon small pickups in hopes of delivering a sought after compact that will be as successful as the Chevy S-10.
Among the small truck segment’s strongest sellers at the moment are the Toyota Tacoma and the Ford Ranger. However, GM Clovis consumers have been turning their back on the Tacoma due to its dramatically increased sized and increased price tag. The aging Ranger on the other hand will no longer be produced after the end of 2010.
According to J.D. Power and Associates, compact and mid-size pickup trucks accounted for 87,896 sales this year through April. To capitalize on the faltering competition within this segment, GM intends to revamp its small trucks with the goal of keeping them small and making them fuel efficient. The S-10 has always been a strong model, and still remains one of the most popular choices for used SUV in Bremerton. Hopefully GM’s next compact truck will capture that appeal.
Other small trucks in the pipeline include a successor to the Dodge Dakota and Toyota wants to build a truck for its youth-oriented Scion brand.
