Just when you might have thought that the recall madness of millions of vehicles was over, General Motors might be next to bring it all back again. This week it was made public that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation regarding the possibility of corroding brake lines in 6.2 million GM vehicles.

According to the NHTSA, which has received 110 complains of corrosion in brake lines, three crashes may have been linked to the issue. The investigation is centering on about 6 million 1999-2003 GM pickups, SUVs, and some heavy-duty pickup models.

“The complaints allege the loss of braking effectiveness due to brake line rupture because of corrosion,” NHTSA investigator Chris Lash said. “In 37 of these complaints, the brake line failure was confirmed by a dealer inspection.”

After Toyota’s alleged unresponsiveness to concerns regarding its own safety issues, Bremerton auto dealers are quick to point out that General Motors is of course fully cooperating with the investigation.
